Breast MRI
Breast MRI is a radiation free procedure that provides detailed images of the breast, further characterizing lumps and lesions and allowing for pin point localization.
Breast MRI is a valuable addition to mammography. The American Cancer Society (ACS) is now recommending that MRI be used in conjunction with mammography in women with a high risk for breast cancer.
An MRI of the breast is done in cases where:
- Additional imaging is needed from an inconclusive mammogram
- A patient has dense breasts
- A patient has breast implants
- A patient in the high risk category for breast cancer (see link to Breast MRI: New ACS recommendations listed below for more information about risk categories)
- An assessment of a known primary tumor is needed
- Therapeutic planning
Our powerful open 3T MRI imaging system, along with most advanced MRI surface coils and Computer Aided Detection (CAD) assists our highly trained physicians in providing patients’ a faster, more accurate diagnosis. The 3T MRI shows very fine detail in the breast which helps in locating and evaluating suspicious lesions. This is an invaluable tool in detecting breast cancer at an early stage.
Patient Preparation
There is very little preparation for the MRI procedure. To ensure your safety, you will be asked question regarding your medical history. You may eat normally and go about your daily routine. Continue to take any medications prescribed by your doctor unless otherwise directed. In certain instances, a contrast agent may be administered by injection to allow the images to be more distinct. Because of the magnetic field, you will be asked to leave coins, jewelry, watches, glasses, credit cards, keys, hairpins, and other metal objects in a safe place outside the scan room.
