Interesting Facts About Ultrasounds

Diagnostic ultrasound, also called sonography or diagnostic medical sonography, is an imaging method that uses sound waves to produce images of structures within your body. The images can provide valuable information for diagnosing and directing treatment for a variety of diseases and conditions.

Ultrasound is a form of mechanical energy that is non-invasive. Ultrasound imaging produces a sound wave and receives echoes in response. Ultrasound technology does not use radiation to produce images, and as a result, ultrasonic waves cannot pass through bones due to their density.

Robert Hooke (1635-1703) was an English scientist, natural philosopher, and architect who first noted that it would be possible to study the inside of the body using sound waves. In 1794, Italian physiologist Lazzaro Spallanzani studied the way bats navigated in the dark. This understanding became the basis for modern ultrasound physics. John J. Wild (1914-2009) is credited as being the Father of Medical Ultrasound. He is best known for using ultrasound to diagnose cancer.

There are three main categories of ultrasound imaging: pregnancy ultrasound, diagnostic ultrasound, and ultrasound guidance for procedures.

A wide range of conditions can be diagnosed with the assistance of diagnostic ultrasound imaging:

·      Identifying the causes of pain, swelling, and infections

·      Abnormal growths, like tumors or cysts
